I’m Famous! Well, as Far as the Christian Fundies are Concerned

My Christian Funda-mental-ist friends made a video of me contradicting their vile message of “do as we do or be dammed” during Mardi Gras. I’m on YouTube here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVtByqYzKg4 (I love how they got my teeth showing on the video still.)

Notice we go on and on and on and…. about whether the holy babble say’s the world is flat or a sphere. They say “it’s in the book of Isaiah”. I assume they’re referring to Isaiah 40:22 which says:

(Isa 40:22 NRSV) It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to live in;

The classic Christian argument is that the word “circle” implies sphere where anyone thats got past third grade could see that “circle” means “circle”. (I’ll pause for a while for the Christian fun-dim-mentalists amongst us to catch up.) Their excuse was that the Hebrew language didn’t have a word for sphere. However, there is a word for ball, that is used elsewhere, so wouldn’t that have been more appropriate than “circle”?

For an excellent in depth analysis of the babble’s flat earth philosophy go to http://www.goatstar.org/the-bibles-flat-earthsolid-sky-dome-universe/ .

Anyway, I have to admit the error of my ways… That is to get wrapped up in a useless meaningless argument with a bunch of common sense denialists. Their technique is to simply disagree with ‘everything’ to distract one from the obvious inanity and hurt of their religion. For example, see the following video.

I should learn to focus on religion’s problems such as instigating most wars, The Crusades, The Conquistadores, The Inquisition, condoning slavery, witch burning, oppression of women, (denying the right to choose while simultaneously opposing contraception), discrimination against gays, Priest child abuse, distortion of science, (imprisonment of Galileo, evolution denial, stem cell research, etc.), delusional ideas, (world created in seven days, Noah’s arc, born of a virgin, the resurrection and atonement), the right of death with dignity, anti-condoms even for disease prevention, and the child abuse of indoctrination and the threat of hell.

Did I miss anything?

Lastly, I’d like to point out that I resigned as one of the Directors of NOSHA due to personal reasons and also NOSHA, existing primarily for providing a community for free thinkers, was uncomfortable with ‘promoting’ atheism. As you can see, I don’t have that problem. I consider NOSHA to be an outstanding organization and thoroughly recommend anyone attending it’s monthly meetings. As it happens, Professor Peter J. Brancazio, author of The Bible From Cover to Cover, is presenting this month. Go to www.nosha.info for more information.

  1. Now, now. Wrong again. I can show you this more clearly on this site that the word translated "circle" does not mean a flat circle, which was what you were arguing.

    1) circle, circuit, compass
    2) (BDB) vault (of the heavens)

For a better understanding of flat earth, go to wikipedia here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flat_earth

    From this site:
The false belief that medieval Christianity believed in a flat earth has been referred to as The Myth of the Flat Earth. In 1945, it was listed by the Historical Association (of Britain) as the second of 20 in a pamphlet on common errors in history. The myth that people of the Middle Ages believed that the Earth was flat only entered the popular imagination in the 19th century, thanks largely to the publication of Washington Irving's fantasy The Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus in 1828.

You have been told these things on several occasions, but you don't listen or investigate anything you believe to be true.

  2. *Sigh* It is so exhausting and, quite frankly, very sad that you insist on continuing to refute the statement that “the Bible was written by people that didn’t know the earth was round”. No doubt, to the casual reader, your perseverance in advertising that you’re dumber than a bag of door knobs must be quite entertaining.

You’re still flogging the dead horse of Isaiah 40:22 by, initially referencing the Reasons to Believe website, which is a kin to asking a bullshit salesman if it was a good idea to sell bullshit, and then you come up with a definition that says “a circle, sphere used of the arch or vault of the sky”. Well the sky dome or “spherical” arch of the sky as you like to put it; that’s exactly the model of the Earth put forward http://www.goatstar.org/the-bibles-flat-earthsolid-sky-dome-universe/#solid%20sky

Furthermore, your statement that “medieval Christianity” knew the world was round is completely true! But medieval Christianity is from about 1100 CE to 1300 CE where the Bible was written up to 1500 BCE for the Old Testament and about 100 CE for the New Testament.

So go and sit in a corner ‘dumb ass’ and read your book of myths if you like. But why do you have to milk this poor meaningless cow to death while there are much more urgent matters that are caused by your putrid beliefs such as it being responsible for Instigating most wars, The Crusades, The Conquistadores, The Inquisition, condoning slavery, witch burning, oppression of women, (denying the right to choose while simultaneously opposing contraception), discrimination against gays, Priest child abuse, distortion of science, (imprisonment of Galileo, evolution denial, stem cell research, etc.), delusional ideas, (world created in seven days, Noah’s arc, born of a virgin, the resurrection and atonement), the right of death with dignity, anti-condoms even for disease prevention, and the child abuse of indoctrination and the threat of hell.

    Nothing worth discussing there eh?

  3. Doug, I agree with your assessment of NOSHA in being a great organization and its not wanting to promote atheism, which I also have no problem doing myself.

Charlotte alerted us to your page and I'll be checking here more often now. Keep up the great work of promoting reason.
